Immunomedics cites potential blood test for cancer

<div id="subtitle">Immunomedics reports positive study data on potential blood test for pancreatic cancer</div><div><p>The biopharmaceutical company Immunomedics on Thursday said a new study shows one of its antibodies may identify early stage pancreatic cancer.</p><p>The company said the blood test using the clivatuzumab antibody was 62 percent sensitive for detecting stage-1 pancreatic cancer, or cancer confined to the pancreas. It was 86 percent sensitive for detecting stage-2 pancreatic cancer and 91 percent sensitive for later-stage cancers, all of which have spread.</p><p>The study involved 68 patients who had pancreatic cancer surgery and 19 healthy patients. Results were presented at the annual Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium in Orlando, Fla.</p><p>Immunomedics, based in Morris Plains, N.J., said about 42,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2010.</p><p>Clivatuzumab is currently being studied as a potential treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer.</p><p>Shares of Immunomedics Inc. rose 32 cents, or 7.6 percent, to $4.55.
